Welcome readers.  Welcome to the blog of Lars Hindsley.

I draw the title of my blog from a seemingly and misleading paradoxical statement: Another Lousy Day in Paradise.  Most people don't realize this is a positive statement.  The worst day in paradise is a great day folks.  Another lousy day in paradise is STILL a great day to be had.  My articles come from my point of view in my life of paradise.

Here you will find my blog ranges from expressive writing (expressed from this writers point of view) to persuasive writing (emphasizing you - my audience) from my provincial point of view.   However you also find a good bit of referential writing as well as a blend of opinion within my referential writing.   This wide range of writing types results in my broad audience.

I write about subjects (experiences and personal knowledge) you can apply to your lives.  Sometimes my pathos not only includes my experiences but the pathos I draw from experiences.  I’ve learned that perception is everything and reality is nothing.  What we perceive for ourselves to be true is our reality.  I consider this mental model in every reader as I write any expressive or blended referential article.  It's the foundation from which I support my expressive articles.

In the last 20 years the art of writing has experienced a boon.  The advent of the Internet re-established the need for good writing skills through e-mail and web pages.  The Internet also becomes a vital source in informative or referential articles I produce.   Many times I merely incorporate source materials from the Internet to illustrate my points or augment my position on a subject.  However, in almost every case I write on subjects based on personal experience.

The scope of my writing here really tests my abilities as a writer.  As mentioned my audience ranges due to my varied writing of informative articles, referential writing (articles that explain or analyze), to opinion, fictional short stories, poetry, and contemporary reviews.

Many of you perform a great deal of referential writing when you write business memos or reports or article in a trade publication.   Taking notes in a business meeting is referential writing.  Still fuzzy on the term referential writing?

For you college students, your thesis is referential (aim) writing not unlike a book report.  What is the difference between the two?  Book reports don't inject editorial.   They merely tell what the book is about. It's dry and factual.   A thesis allows you as a writer to have more fun by injecting opinion.  A thesis allows or expects you to interpret what you read.  You express your views on the book or subject.  You can draw comparisons, project views, interpret change, and the list goes on.  Your opinion is backed up by your research of the facts.  The bottom line is you offer your viewpoint which starts on a broad scale then narrows down to a single point.  You can have many topics drawn from one book or subject, so it becomes important to narrow your topic.   When I write here, I pick a topic but I do have fun sometimes and veer off topic to a degree only to return to it in my articles.

There are times when I'm writing articles I feel like I'm writing a thesis because just like in the process of writing a thesis I'll start on one idea and wind up on another by modifying what I intended to write about.  It's an exploration as I evaluate the topic, idea or point of view in which I'm writing.  By the time I publish my article here, I have an intended topic or point I've centered it around.

Where referential writing focuses on the subject, expressive writing emphasizes the writer... me. :)  To this end I feel much of what I blog about is to a large degree expressive writing.

In my life I attack it in the manner of  "It's what you make it."  I'm a positive person, I make my life a great time even in tough situations.  While I used to take on serious and challenging topics like cultural assimilation, I have to admit I try and stick to friendly subject matter now such as how to bake home made soft pretzels because of a legal harassment I’ve been subject to in the past year.  I do have strong family values and the moral compass inside me has proven to put my own expressive point of view in context.

While I do in fact write elsewhere under a pen name, I will continue to write here under my given name, Lars Hindsley.  I’m proud of my family name as any of you should be of your own.  One day so much of what I’ve written may be of greater value than it is today and I hope I’m alive to see that day.   For now, I’m proud just to see my four year old spell his first and last name without any help.  You have to put everything in perspective I suppose.

I look forward to your continued readership.
