Considering or planning a resolution of change for the new year? Do you have a mental list or actual list of resolutions of change? And has the New Year Resolution become a game to you? Do you take it lightly or has it become a challenge of serious importance to you? Allow me to share my own experiences with the New Year Resolution.
What's the point of a resolution in the first place? Improvement? Like ending a bad habit, self improvement or guilt? The idea behind the New Year's Resolution is simple. You are using the beginning of a new year as a means to start fresh in achieving your goal. It could be a better path to either achieve a personal goal or make a change in your life that will improve your life. Let's cover the typical list of standby resolutions (according to U.S. Government data) many of us decide to take a crack at. I'll add my two cents to these as what comes to mind as I see them.
Lose weight (self-improvement) Manage debt/save money (living responsibly) Get a better job (quality of life) Get fit (self-improvement) Eat right (health) Get a better education (quality of life) Drink less alcohol (health) Quit smoking (health) Reduce stress overall and/or at work (quality of life) Take a trip (recreation) Volunteer to help others (guilt)
I look at these things I get it. We all want a better future. It takes work. Nothing on that list above is simple. It takes a commitment to change your life. It takes work. However here in America, our society has gone far from the concept that you need to earn what you want. The prevailing mental model throughout our country is that it's your birthright to have a nice car, or big house or even health ... more»
UPDATE: Got a call from the ER. Wrist is in fact broken. I thought so.
Just a word to friends and colleagues about my road side accident. I'm going to be fine. I have not told my sons or my mother what really took place as I don't want to alarm or scare them. I'm not posting this note to discuss it either. This was an inline skating accident, not an auto accident. I was not in my car.
I learned the importance of safety from this. I was wearing a helmet but should have been wearing my kneepads and wrist guards too, at least if I'm going to skate in the main road. I may be agile on skates and quite capable, but there is always the unknown factor to be prepared for. I will be more safe in the future.
My folly was hubris I suppose. Enough said.
A friend came to my aid. Her name is Valerie and she is a nurse. This was a big help. She drove me to the ER and stayed with me the entire time. Thanks Val if you're reading this.
As for injuries; nothing major, thank God. My kids said they would pray for me that I had no broken bones and I'd like to believe that they indeed helped because even after X-rays my wrist feels broken. I have a splint on for a badly sprained wrist and I'm feeling sharp pain down my wrist from typing.
So to all of you that texted me yesterday, I didn't reply as I really just was having too hard a time with it. Remember, these things work as phones too. I've posted a photo.
There is something about story telling when it is done faithfully to the actual story. This modern film take is a drama on the original F.Scott Fitzgerald short story (a comedy) which takes great liberties and perhaps mostly because I think the writers were high on watching Forest Gump before drafting this screenplay. That is not to say good intentions and good story writing didn't come into play in the making of this updated film version of the short story by F.Scott Fitzgerald - The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. In comparison to the short story, the film is far better. How often can that be said?
Many changes are made from the original story and aside from the first five minutes of Benjamin Button being completely unnecessary and should have been on the cutting room floor--smart plausible changes were made; from time frame, location and large plot points. In the original short story Benjamin does not spend his life alone and is not abandoned by his father at birth. I won't spoil the film but many other changes are made. For the purpose of a better story in celluloid the changes are a dramatic upgrade. Yet something is wrong with The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. It is more than just the hype. For example, the soundtrack is a swansong to New Orleans; the composer Alexandre Desplat scored Benjamin's theme to be played backwards as well as forward. That was a lot of hard work for a sublime piece. It seems so much effort has gone into this story, and it falls short of greatness despite it's efforts to be great. It's a good retrofit of a short story, yet Forest Gump has been done once. The Gump manner of story telling is becoming hackneyed.
What may be wrong with Benjamin Button is what is right with it; the director David Fincher. Best known for intense and gritty films such as Fight Club (also featuring Brad Pitt), Fincher excels at cinematography and overall visual performances. Could it be his non-sentimental look at life is what makes it so hard to connect with the characters in this story? As people leave Benjamin's life, you feel for him as you should, but you never get to appreciate the lives of those that come into contact with him. Fincher is a great director, one known for detail. But don't assume his attention to detail is perfect, just look at Fight Club and you'll know the references to Delaware landmarks are wrong. From location and direction to cultural points. But then again, those references were also mistaken by the Chuck Palahniuk. David Fincher has delivered an elegant film but because it is based on a short story which is about an ordinary life going through an unordinary experience, there is not a whole lot that can be done with the story. As a footnote, Wilmington Delaware is referenced for the second time in a Fincher film.
As long ago as 1860 it was the proper thing to be born at home. At present, so I am told, the high gods of medicine have decreed that the first cries of the young shall be uttered upon the anaesthetic air of a hospital, preferably a fashionable one. So young Mr. and Mrs. Roger Button were fifty years ahead of style when they decided, one day in the summer of 1860, that their first baby should be born in a hospital. Whether this anachronism had any bearing upon the astonishing history I am about to set down will never be known.
I shall tell you what occurred, and let you judge for yourself. The Roger Buttons held an enviable position, both social and financial, in ante-bellum Baltimore. They were related to the This Family and the That Family, which, as every Southerner knew, entitled them to membership in that enormous peerage which largely populated the Confederacy. This was their first experience with the charming old custom of having babies--Mr. Button was naturally nervous. He hoped it would be a boy so that he could be sent to Yale College in Connecticut, at which institution Mr. Button himself had been known for four years by the somewhat obvious nickname of "Cuff."
On the September morning consecrated to the enormous event he arose nervously at six o'clock dressed himself, adjusted an impeccable stock, and hurried forth through the streets of Baltimore to the hospital, to determine whether the darkness of the night had borne in new life upon its bosom.
When he was approximately a hundred yards from the Maryland Private Hospital for Ladies and Gentlemen he saw Doctor Keene, the family physician, descending the front steps, rubbing his hands together with a washing movement--as all doctors are required to do by the unwritten ethics of their profession.
Mr. Roger Button, the president of Roger Button & Co., Wholesale Hardware, began to run toward Doctor Keene with much less dignity than was expected from a Southern gentleman of that picturesque period. "Doctor Keene!" he called. "Oh, Doctor Keene!"
The doctor heard him, faced around, and stood waiting, a curious expression settling on his harsh, medicinal face as Mr. Button drew near.
"What happened?" demanded Mr. Button, as he came up in a gasping rush. "What was it? How is she" A boy? Who is it? What---"
"Talk sense!" said Doctor Keene sharply, He appeared somewhat irritated.
"Is the child born?" begged Mr. Button.
Doctor Keene frowned. "Why, yes, I suppose so--after a fashion." Again he threw a curious glance at Mr. Button.
Ah... one of those songs about you doing better than your ex. Seems a lot of people do better after moving on.
I wake up every evening With a big smile on my face And it never feels out of place And you're still probably working At a nine to five pace I wonder how bad that taste
When you see my face Hope it gives you hell Hope it gives you hell When you walk my way Hope it gives you hell Hope it gives you hell
Now where's you picket fence love And where's that shiny car And did it ever get you far You never seemed so tense love I've never seen you fall so hard Do you know where you are And the truth be told I miss you And truth be told I'm lying
When you see my face Hope it gives you hell Hope it gives you hell When you walk my way Hope it gives you hell Hope it gives you hell
If you find a man that's worth a damn and treats you well Then he's a fool you're just as well Hope it gives you hell
Tomorrow you'll be thinking to yourself Where'd it all go wrong? But the list goes on and on
The truth be told I miss you And truth be told I'm lying
When you see my face hope it gives you hell Hope it gives you hell When you walk my way Hope it gives you hell Hope it gives you hell
If you find a man that's worth a damn and treats you well Then he's a fool, you're just as well Hope it gives you hell

What is it like being a single parent? It's not that hard. It's never been hard for me. I put being a parent first before all things. When I got married years ago, my wife knew one thing above all others. If she made me choose between her and my son, there was no second guessing. Perhaps this is the downside of being a single parent. You and everyone around you knows where your top priority lies.
I'm a single full time father of two. This is an honor. And every parent should appreciate the smallest of moments they have with their children. I had to fight in court for the right to be my sons' father. What does that mean to you? It means that in my life, I had to fight in court just to be able to wake up in the morning and cook my children breakfast, or watch them brush their teeth at night.
If you are a parent and you have children and have not been in court to earn this privilege, I can say to you now. I bet you never thought of how precious it is just to see them brush their teeth. For me when my two sons argue and fight, I get annoyed. But I'm also happy for them. Happy they have that chance to needle each other. So many parents take their children for granted.
Then take parents that have children and don't even want them. This tears me up. How these mothers and fathers can off their kids because they want to be single goes against all that is right with humanity. I get very upset over these news pieces. This is a subject so hard for me to discuss, that I won't. I think of my own children and ... more»
I was talking to a friend of mine He makes sense from time to time He told me about secrets of survival All's fair in love and war You win some but you lose a lot more You can't hold onto a heart that's dying
I Started thinking about a girl I knew And all the pain I put her through Where is she now when I need someone to save me?
Reminiscing is the only way out But I've got no one left to dream about They come and they go No using trying
You say you know my kind But you waste your time You're falling into Danger
I get blown away each time I hear this version of Anyone Who Had A Heart. I love the story it tells. The singer is still in love but the person they are singing to is still hurting them emotionally. It keeps love simple, there is a raw honesty in the words that tear you up inside when it is performed with passion. Wynonna Judd reaches deep in this performance. With Burt at the helm of a full orchestra this is a stunning delivery of Anyone Who Had A Heart. The crescendo really delivers at the end too.
This is the most stirring performance of any Burt Bacharach song I've ever heard. I'm a true fan of Burt's talent, his mark is everywhere including my household, or households as it were.
I've honestly never seen this video before, I don't think watching it does the music justice. You need to just feel it, rather than see it. If you have the chance to listen the Dusty Springfield version, pick that up too.
Anyone who ever loved Could look at me and know that I love you Anyone who ever dreamed Could look at me and know I dream of you Knowing I love you, so
Anyone who had a heart Would take me in his arms and love me too You couldnt really have a heart And hurt me like you hurt me And be so untrue What am I to do?
Every time you go away I always say this time its goodbye dear Loving you the way I do I take you back Without you Id die dear Knowing I love you, so
Anyone who had a heart Would take me in his arms and love me too You couldnt really have a heart And hurt me like you hurt me And be so untrue What am I to do?
I have a bone to pick with women today. Nothing major but worth noting. I've learned something during my short life about women. When a man has an opinion of dissension from a woman, it is often labeled abuse. How convenient. So for you men reading this, be wary of the traps you unknowingly fall into.
And for any woman I'm dating that may read this ... <smile> I've got the backbone to know my opinion is not a form of abuse. It may be wrong, it may be right, but it's not abuse.
Thankfully the women in my life are people I vet carefully and frankly I don't enter into relationships with anyone that is like the woman I describe above. So for all intents and purposes, this post doesn't apply to the women in my life.
Well, the headline says it all folks. In this Times Online article, Wall Street Broker and former Nasdaq Chairman Bernard Madoff is about to (actually already has) screw countless New York socialites out of potentially everything they have. Madoff had been pulling off a stunning years old Ponzi scheme that has reached over $50 billion dollars. I don't care what era you are in folks, $50 billion dollars is a staggering amount of money to bilk.
What is a Ponzi scheme? It's like a pyramid scheme. It operates within the investment world where people hand over their money out of greed. They are promised they will get an abnormally high return on their investment. Many early investors do get a large return on the money they entrust to the perceived arbitrage because it temporarily succeeds by way of the pyramid scheme concept. People early on get their money back as promised because ... more»
OK, I hope you are sitting down readers. Wait. Of course you are sitting down. Good. Check this out, it is soooo funny. Barack Obama intends to use his full name at swearing in! What! you ask? Barack is going use that word! The one no one can use because it sounds racist. The one that starts with 'H'? Oh yeah. You can't make this stuff up folks. Barack Obama may have Chief Justice Roberts 'emphasize' his middle name at his inauguration. Now... I got lambasted just this past November on another publication for the mere mentioning of Barack's middle name? So allow me this moment in the spotlight to bask in the glory of being right.
OK.. moments over... Then there is theOnion whom for all their political incorrectness, theOnion spoke the truth when they claimed all the obsessive Obama supporters (the type that attacked me) had not not yet realized they had no life. If you didn't catch theOnion's post election coverage on Obama Supporters, here is the video, it is quite humorous. Especially if you were not drinking the cool-aid and you had a life prior to the election. Now if the video above isn't enough ...Today Gawker.com supported that parody with a serious article on the subject! Read: Obama supports have had to come to grips with how empty their lives are after the election. On the upside, The Supreme Court has turned down an emergency appeal from a New Jersey man who says President-elect Barack Obama is ineligible to be president because he was a British subject at birth.

I can't get over the line, "Sick of this dress and these Jimmy Choos" (Jimmy Choo's at right). Essentially, she misses her man, and all her upscale material things mean little as they can't replace the feeling she gets from being with someone she cares about. Awww... :)
The up-tempo dance version is in my player list to the left. Press play and decide which you like better. Or just swing into your local Abercrombie & Fitch to hear it played every 5 minutes. LOL
OK... this is a brainless dance song, but here are the lyrics anyhow..

OK, we all get lists out there of what were great 80's songs. Sorry, my list is the one that is truly the best. Here is why... I grew up in the 80's smack in the heart of it. I was 17 when ABC,Tears for Fears and Fixx broke and I was with them on albums prior to the mainstream music scene adopted them as the higher echelon of "new wave". In high-school I was the "go to" guy for music and what was new. And I was sadly a real romantic fool that eventually became a song writer and became a singer in a band one day. I have the true qualifications to make my list, your most reliable list.
I base this list on out and out musical impact, how it can affect your mood, and of course equal value is placed on the words, lyrical content is important to me. The words used are what defines the heart and soul put into the song.
Nowhere Girl - B-Movie "Nowhere girl, what you have you need."
This is a haunting melody. Perhaps my ultimate anthem of love denied, it holds its own as a timeless driving synth pop song. I was so angry that any beautiful woman could never love anyone but them self and I'm sure other young boys growing up in the 80's felt the same way... certainly B-Movie got it. You can feel the hollowness of the woman in this song as she produces that eerie "ooooo oooo" sound.
Let Me Go - Heaven 17 "Once we were years ahead but now those thoughts are dead, let me go. ...I walk alone and yet never say goodbye, let me go! ... Found guilty of no crime, they were the best years of our lives."
As a writer of lyrics, I often discount songs completely when they don't offer me something to learn, or share a story. Philosophy is a key part of my life. In many ways I consider myself a philosopher. The lessons I've learned I impart to my children, and sometimes here at my blog.
Being somewhat philosophical tonight, grant me this moment.
I live a life that was dealt to me after divorce. I'm a guy that made the best of a bad situation. I feel that life isn't fair but you have to be mature enough to accept everything it gives you. Please don't call me lonely when I'm really just alone. I'm not in a relationship, but I sometimes wonder if I will be. It would take a very special woman to keep me around for a lifetime. That thought comes to mind when I hear the words: "Having to Learn the art of trust".
To you casual readers, I'm sure this is nonsense, but to my friends that catch up with me through this blog, you know I'm about one of the happiest people you know. But it doesn't mean when I fold the sheets back on the bed at the end of the day, that I don't wonder if there is someone I'm meant to be with. Now with those private thoughts tucked away in my head, I recently heard a dance tune by BWO called, Destiny of Love.
One day I pointed out the message of this song to people around me; they were quite honestly--completely unaware. I often wonder; how many people listen to lyrics? Even a dance song has a purpose and reason for being. Great art is inspired by great people, people that have great experiences and able to express them words and music.
This video is big on visual, but the words are well inspired. Both from the philosophical point of view about the journey of life and how it leads you to love. It is simple in many ways. It is profound on a number of levels. You'll have to decide for yourself. I'll include the video and lyrics as usual.
It is love rather than sexual lust or unbridled sexuality if, in addition to the need or want involved, there is also some impulse to give pleasure to the persons thus loved and not merely to use them for our own selfish pleasure.
There is a saying, "Good artist copy, Great artist steal." Sounds like someone trying to justify their behavior eh? Well before I tell you who said that, consider this story...
Recently Joey Satriani has filed a law suit against Coldplay for stealing a musical sound; tantamount to plagiarism . He's suing for any and all profits. The song in question is Viva La Vida. The question is now did Coldplay lift Joey Satriani's (IV V I vi) chord progression as Chris Martin's harmonic (C,D,G,E) vocal melody for Viva La Vida? It's almost a full measure (7 notes) which will most likely make it to court as the melodic line in question and diatonic chord progression are virtually the same. While its not in the same key, the tempo is not exact but close enough which lend to the rhythms sounding similar. Yet the four chords in Viva La Vida do match If I Could Fly.
AND THE GRAMMY GOES TO... Coldplay is up for a grammy this year and Viva La Vida is a big reason. I'm certain I don't need to link to that video. So let's just allow you to cross reference on your own to Joey's Satriani's 2004 instrumental If I Could Fly. Bear with it until it reaches approximately the 49 second point. What you should hear will take you to the 1:19 second point.
For a side by side comparison while BOTH SONG'S PLAY (overlap) AT THE SAME TIME... Wow... check out this comparison video:
So who does the famous quote of "Good artist copy, great artist steal." belong to?
None other than renowned artist, painter Pablo Picasso.
What does that mean? To me it means Coldplay improved on Satriani's melody.
Here is why. And first off, I'm not a liberal democrat, I'm not an activist. I'm an American that is no nonsense. With that out of the way, here is why it is the auto makers fault car sales are down. Key words... "auto" and "maker". Get it? You make the cars we have to buy. But guess what! We don't have to buy them? And as of lately, we have NOT been buying your same old same old cars. They still guzzle gass even at $1.70 per gallon. People are no longer reactionary, we are waiting for the shoe to drop again. No one wants to be stuck with a car that gets 18 miles to the gallon when prices go up again. Even if they don't, 18 miles or 22 miles to the gallon is unacceptable.
We have wanted and needed cars for years that can drive 40 to 50 miles per gallon or an electric car or other options than gas guzzling SUV's Mustangs and even Ford Taurus. Car dealerships are closing at a breakneck pace across the U.S. I feel horrible, this is my country too. And I'm really mad that for the past twenty years of my life I've read how the big three automakers and big oil refuse to make any car that does not use petro gas. What a joke.
Well guess what guys... You screwed us all. You, me, everyone. Sure the banks had a pyramid scheme that caused the credit collapse etc... sure commodities speculators drove up the cost of barrels of oil. But you make the cars. We had a truly viable alternative as long ago as 1996!
Has anyone seen Who Killed The Electric Car? It's a documentary about how an excellent option to gas was in our midst and how the oil companies and auto manufacturers used politics to repeal a law that forced them to make oil alternative cars! During this time in 1996 the cars not only worked, they cost less etc... Thank God companies like Tesla exist now. If we rely on GM, Ford and Chrysler to deliver an electric car, they will never do it as long as they are beholden to big oil.
Goto the library or get it on Netflix or Blockbuster, but see the film. It won't bore you. It will piss you off. And if enough of us get upset, then FINALLY maybe this country will move in another direction. Politicians can't change this country. We have to do it. We must want it.
These cars were among us! Watch the film and you will be incensed at the big three auto manufacturers as you see the truth of why we are going RIGHT BACK TO GASOLINE. Money!
The silver lining is companies such as Tesla that are funded by investors (owners of Google) are finally beginning to emerge. Finally companies are able to stand up to GM, Chrysler and Ford to offer us cars such as this one in the video below. And this car exists. Yes Tesla is creating a high-end version first but they promise the money earned from the rich buying their Tesla sports car will then pave the way for family car production next.
And what is sick as that the U.S. population has been bled dry. We have no more blood to give. Big oil got rich throughout 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008. We paid for gas on credit cards, our home heating bills tripled and quadrupled. It was nuts. No one could buy anything except food and pay their rent or mortgage. With credit maxed out and people unable to do any more.
Perhaps one of the most haunting and tragic of love stories is that of Wuthering Heights. Have you read it? When I was a lad of 21 I came across the 1939 film version. It was Emily Brontë's masterpiece novel at its best. What young man didn't understand the plight of Heathcliff? He had so little in life but the truest of love for his beloved Catherine. It didn't hurt that Merle Oberon and Laurence Olivier had true romantic tension on screen. Using Brontë's own words, they penetrate the hardest of among us. The score of the 1939 film is incessantly ardent. Perhaps it's the nature of that era where violins were used not just prevalently, but perfectly. But again, Wuthering Heights is more than the film. It is a novel in a class with few peers.
Wuthering Heights is possibly the most heart wrenching love story of all love stories. Set on the English moors in the early 19th century it centers on a Yorkshire farming family named the Earnshaws. Mr. Earnshaw returns from Liverpool with a tattered rogue of a child named Heathcliff. His two children, Hindley and Catherine react differently. Hindley openly and always resents Heathcliff and Catherine quietly becomes Heathcliff's soulmate through the innocence of childhood. As they mature Catherine realizes Heathcliff's social standing and fatedly abandons Heathcliffs love, leaving her conflicted in her passion for him.
I found myself angry that I could not reach into the film and change the fate of these two lovers. I found myself chained to the ending. I walked away with this ... more»
Opec wants American's to pay more for gas. Again. They just bled the cow dry. Our economy collapsed due to sustained high gas prices. People paid for gas on credit cards for over two years and every American that isn't in the top 2% is broke. Unless you are Madonna (and even she is a miser I hear) or Tom Cruise, or someone loaded with money, you are hurting. You may have been fired or live in fear of your job. No one in your family except the children are getting Christmas gifts. Have I nailed this?
