View Article  Doing the right thing doesn't require making noise about it

I'd like to rant today about "doing the right thing".  For instance when a company offends you with a bad product or bad customer service, do you still buy their product?  No.  Do you e-mail the whole world about it?  Most of us don't.  I don't.   How about when someone on TV or in music has different values than yourself?   For instance, I used to record "The View" on my digital recorder (TiVo).  When Rosie O'Donnell joined the show, I stopped watching it.  I stopped recording it.  Why, doesn't matter  ...(Patriotic view points). :)  And did I announce it to the world?  No.  When she leaves the show, I'll record it again.     Are these things exactly about "doing the right thing"? Sorta, bear with me...

Let's get right on target then.  There is the lost money thing.  Ever find money and you returned it (or tried to).  Did you get credit for it?  Most likely, very little. Did you want credit for it?  It came down to you being a good person on the inside and YOU have to live with you.  You shouldn't need credit for doing the right thing.

Cheating on a boyfriend/girlfriend?  Hey, this one really simple.  Why would anyone do this?  In the end, you have to live with yourself.  You want to do the right thing here not for your significant other.  You want to do this for YOU.  Because you have to carry that with you the rest of your life.  Your own self-respect is what is at stake here.  That goes for finding the money too...  But you get the idea.  Doing the right thing isn't glamorous.  It is what makes you, you.  It is what makes you worthwhile.

Doing the right thing is what makes you worth being worthwhile to someone else. It breeds ...   more »

View Article  Strange Week for People

You know, in an effort to give everyone something to read about I figured this little article may satisfy your Lars writing craving for the day.  Remember, I'm not some crazy kinda fool, I'm just like you.

Remember earlier this week I was flicked the bird for being considerate and letting a fellow driver pass me?  We'll today was another funny one.

For the past year or so my youngest son has enjoyed an unusual pastime.  Cracking paintballs.  They say it is the little things in life. :)  We'll I let him stand at the end of the drive and throw 10 or 20 paintballs into the street and watch them crack open.  I usually give him my extras from my paintball hopper after playing.

Well, he does his thing today laughing and playing with dad cracking a few paintballs.  Some don't crack and roll across the street.  We live in a cul' de sac so it rolled a bit.

Now you'd think that good Karma would be in play here because I get a call from a friend whom was in an auto accident today (nothing serious thankfully) and asked me to pick up her kids along with my own from school.  I pull in the garage and the kids tell me a man is at the door.

It's a neighbor.  Mind you not one that I usually talk to a lot.  In fact he's the only one I don't talk to a lot.  But we get along.  He's holding in his hand three paintballs.  LOL I know what's coming.

He starts to explain to me that they rolled into his yard and doesn't like it.  I say to him "No problem it won't happen again."  He then adds, "This is not the first time." and he wants me to agree that ...   more »

View Article  In The Palm of Your Hand

Today I bring to you In the Palm of your Hand by Alison Krauss. I have often listened to this song many a night for years.  I find myself listening to it while I work late at night, or in this case, through my afternoon.  Yes, this is a song for those of us that believe in God.  However if you don't believe in God, I think you will still find this song to be quite peaceful and pensive.  It's got a great message too.  Money and the selfish need for it will not bring you happiness.  I have to agree.  Some of the happiest times in my life were days when I all I had were the people I loved and no more.  They say God is the answer...  Listen to this song and you decide.

In The Palm of Your Hand

If I could have the world and all it owns
A thousand kingdoms, a thousand thrones
If all the earth were mine to hold
With wealth my only goal

I'd spend my gold on selfish things
Without the love that Your life brings
Just a little bit more is all I'd need
'Til life was torn from me

I'd rather be in the palm of Your hand
Though rich or poor I may be
Faith can see right through the circumstance
Sees the forest in spite of the trees
Your grace provides for me

If I should walk the streets no place to sleep
No faith in promises You keep
I'd have no way to buy my bread
With a bottle for my bed

But if I trust the One who died for me
Who shed His blood to set me free
If I live my life to trust in You
Your grace will see me through

I'd ...   more »

View Article  Direction of Relationships

I believe that relationships travel in directions.  They can travel in a positive direction or a negative direction.   Look at your own. Seriously...  Let's not look at Lars, this is not about me.  Think of yourself.

Think of someone you are close to.  OK, got them in your head?  Are you in a positive or negative place?  If it is a good place then you are spiraling in a positive direction.  It's that simple.  But what if things are not so good.  When things are not in a good place, you have to fix it.  One or both of you must stop the negative spiral.   And the momentum of that negative may be great, or just somewhat.  The worse it is, the more effort you will need to take to stop that spiral from heading further and further down the chute.  Imagine, you are in a cone, you are spiraling down like a marble.  The further down you go, the harder it is to stop that momentum and there is less room to move and make things right.

Bummer eh?  But here is the good news. Because this analogy is so easy to follow, all you need to do is go forward on fixing your spiral.  And remember, when you do fix it, you have to nurture that positive spiral.  Good luck!  Knowing where you are in life is half the battle of knowing how to get where you want to be!

And remember my motto, "If you never quit, you get there."  It goes hand in hand with, "The journey is the reward."

Send Her My Love

It's been so long
Since I've seen her face You say she's doing fine
I still recall a sad cafe'

How it hurt so bad to see her cry
I didnt want to say good-bye

Send her my love, memories remain
Send her my love, roses never fade
Send her my love

The same hotel, the same old room
I'm on the road again
She needed so much more
Than I could give

We knew our love could not pretend
Broken hearts can always mend.

(chorus)

Callin out her name I'm dreamin
Reflections of a face I'm seein
It's her voice
That keeps on haunting me

Send her, send her my love
Roses never fadeMemories remain

Send her, send her, my love

For the best affect.... listen 4 or 5 times over...

View Article  Night At The Museum - Movie Review

How many family films are actually family friendly at all levels? Night At The Museum is.  If you watch this film knowing that it was built for kids in mind, you will be very happy with the experience.  I watched this film with my four year old son and ten year old son.  I realized early on that the adult characters were not portrayed as dim and the this held my attention more than anything.  But let's get to the plot...

Ben Stiller (Larry) plays a divorced father with visitation of his ten year old son.   He is coming to terms with not being a business mogul or standout success in life and takes a job as security guard simply because he must have a job as to not let his son down.  So you have a guy that is wanted to be great accepting a job that is not so great.    What happens is he finds that as another character in the movie says, "Some are born great, others have greatness thrust upon them".   And there is lies the plot without giving away the story.

I don't want to spoil the fun, and you must know that from the trailers or even the box cover, that in the museum where Larry works every exhibit comes to life at night.   The cause of this effect I'll leave you to learn from watching the story for yourself.   But if you are prone to allowing your self to suspend disbelief during movie experiences, this one is easy to accept.

Ben deals with a lot of chaos in a logical and sensible manner.   The special effects are perfect as they pretty much go un-noticed.  I mean for instance a prehistoric T-Rex (only the bones) meanders around and never once did I ...   more »

View Article  Racism works two ways

I write articles meant to provoke converstaion and get things out in the open.  This article is more of a reflection and not meant to provoke. Please don't read it as such.

OK, I'm not going to get people upset I promise.  Heck, if anyone should be upset it is me, but I'm not.  I'm just a bit confused.  Yesterday I picked up my children at my parents home and had to drive to good ole' Costco.  I'm driving up Old Baltimore Pike when I see someone is tailgating me.  Apparently I'm driving too slowly for them.  This bothered me I’ll admit.  I don't like it when people do that.  But there is no way to stop them unless you slam on the breaks and then you risk both of you being in an accident.  You get the idea.  And in fact, years ago in my twenties I remember once or twice tapping the breaks and holding them to cause the tailgater to back off in a panic.  I assure, I didn't do that on this occasion ...and I had my two children in the car so don't second guess me here.

So what happened?  I actually decided to let this person by.  Old Baltimore Pike has two wide shoulders now and I just pulled over to let them through.  No sooner did I pull over did the driver give me the long "beep" of the horn like I was an idiot (for whatever reason) and as she drove by with her child in the back seat in a baby seat, she puts her window down and gives me the finger, yelling something I couldn't hear.  I beeped back and put my hands up to show her "what did I do?"

I looked back at my kids and the both had ...   more »

View Article  Blog Writers Have a Responsibility

Today I learned that even though I keep my blog for my own enjoyment and figure maybe two people in the whole world read it, me and the one person reading this article now (LOL), the fact is more people read this blog than I was ever aware.  I can track people by IP, after they visit etc... but frankly I don't bother.  I just write and enjoy myself.

So today I'm here to tell you that if I've hurt anybody with anything I've written, I sure never meant to.  Sometimes you write things that are your own private thoughts and you should keep them that way.  However, I've always heard a good writer takes chances and writes about popular and controversial subject matter to stimulate others the think, change and discuss important matters.

I learned today that want is important to me can be just as important to others.  I have to say I'm a bit humbled and realize that above all things, I really don't ever want to hurt someone.  It's just not my style.

So to anyone that I may have offended, recently or in the past, I apologize.  I'll be more careful what comes out of my mouth on paper as life rolls on. :)

View Article  Virginia Tech's time to heal

If you live in America, you know that recently Virginia Tech was assaulted terribly.  For the past two days I can't turn on my TV without seeing wall to wall coverage, talking about the same things over and over.  The only real good news I saw come so far is that the school is sending kids home for a week to be with family.  This is what makes the most sense.  This is where the healing will really begin.

Most of these kids will have family to go home to, and I can tell you as a parent when you see these things you have this uncontrollable urge to hug your children.  To be near them and your appreciation for them being a part of your life is sky high.  I remember September 11th 2001. I remember wanting to get to my son as fast as I could so I could kiss him.  I felt similarly the day of Virginia Tech's rampage.

Despite reports now exposing the young man that did this was truly disturbed; it doesn't bring back the innocent people that were merely living their lives.  There is a special place in my heart for people that are lost to death when they did nothing to earn it.   And of course that is a lot of people.  I recall once, about 6 years ago, I think it was the summer before 911, I was watching ABC Evening News and saw a father and son caught in a cross fire between Israeli and Palestinian fighters on a long city street.  It may have been the single most horrifying thing I ever witnessed.  I cried quietly on my couch, thinking of my own son and myself.   I thought sadly for the father, and then for his son.  ...   more »

View Article  Shooter - Movie Review

This is a classic revenge movie.  My favorite line had me laugh out loud, "You don't understand, they killed my dog."  For the amazing kill count, the one that mattered most to the anti-hero Bob Lee Swagger played by Mark Wahlberg, was his dog.   Mark plays an ex-Marine sniper that is still and idealist.  After losing a close friend in combat, he becomes seclusive and removed from society.  Years later he's recruited to game out how a possible hit on the president can be avoided.  He's implied in the assassination and once that's done, it's payback time.  And why? Because they killed his dog.  :)

As much as I've let out, I can tell you there is enough here to keep you busy, but the story is predictable.  It is what it is, a revenge action suspense flick.  With a little romance along the way, and an anti-hero on the run Bourne Identity feel to it, you hope the pay off is worth while.  And here is where the movie comes up short.  Small problems with continuity don't help either.  In one scene the President arrives from Baltimore from Camden... Uh... right.  Drive south to come from the south?   Then there were the "hills of Philadelphia" car chase scenes.  No hills in Philly, but hey... it's a movie.

But all these things did annoy enough that when you get to the end and want a decent payoff, something plausible, it isn't there.   At least not after you see films like Bourne Identity or the first Mission Impossible where the people in the wrong that were supposed to be on the side of "right" make sense in their warped decisions and positions.

The action is great.  The shooting is fun to watch, but some of the gratuitous face shots ...   more »

View Article  The Philadelphia band The A's

Does anyone remember the band the A's?  I do.  I had to find some of their music on vinyl and record it to CD but as a rock band with a dance edge I think their music stands the test of time.

I think the year was 1981.  I was 15 years old. They had already released their first self titled album and now had some backing from their label Arista.  The album was named A Woman's Got the Power.  It had a skinny girl on the cover holding up an arm almost like making a muscle while holding a glass of milk.

I recall at age 15  I snuck behind the Stone Balloon bar on Main Street in Newark Delaware with a big boom box to record them live through the back door. About halfway through the show a bouncer came back and found me.  He stopped me from recording the gig.  He made me wait and then came back to tell me the band said it was OK for me to record them.  It was my personal copy of them playing live and that was good enough for me.  And this was a big deal to me.  I was 15, I had to ride my bike 7 miles to downtown Newark with this boombox on my handlebars.  I thought I was going to be arrested when this bouncer comes back and notices me sitting there listening...hanging every note.  When he came back with the OK, I was nothing short of shocked and stunned in relief. As a young boy just learning to know who I really liked in music, I was impressed at how cool they must have been to let me record them, even if it was through the stage door.   (I finally got to see the A's live November 21st 2007 - see photos in my A's ReUnion Concert Gallery)

I recall a lot of great new songs on the Woman's Got the Power album but my favorite was still After Last Night from their first album.  Also from the first album they had a fun and quirky tune called C.I.A. Another well done song with complete originality was Words.  In fact I think originality is what made the A's a great local band worthy of the big time. Their songs carried a hook while honestly working on instrumental sounds and riffs that you just didn't hear every day.

During a time when Punk was making a real name for itself the A's were profoundly dance influenced.  During this era the synth was not widely used. It was about to be, but not quite yet. And this is one reason the A's may not have made the cut with music fans.  The world was about to quickly race forward with punk and new wave.  The A's were like Boston in some ways, they clung to the old ways of music making.

I heard that the lead singer Richard Bush was big coke head and the band really never had aspirations of becoming a stadium type band. (NOTE:  I HAVE SINCE RECEIVED A POST BY BAND MEMBER RICK DIFONZO JUNE 30 2007 CORRECTING THIS BAD INFORMATION.  READ HIS FOLLOW-UP FOR THE REAL REASON THE BAND BROKE UP)  And if you are pretty much a clubber with girls on your mind, you better have some damn good songs to take you over the hump, because I'm sure they would love to have become music stars, they just didn't have the maturity to cut the shit when it came to partying. This just didn't compute to me.  How could a guy be so much more into drugs than achieving a worthwhile goal?  What was worse was how could he write heartfelt lyrics while putting his priority on drugs?  (AGAIN THIS PART OF MY ARTICLE STANDS CORRECTED: READ RICK DIFONZO'S COMMENT POST ON THIS ARTICLE).

I should have known
I should have known by now
