I'd like to examine the New Years Resolution.

It is 10:54 PM on December 31st 2004.  It will be just over an hour and it will be a new year.

New year resolutions in general are desires.  A desire to be what a perfect you could be, or would be like.

I have a question for you.  How often have you said you would make changes?  Do you care?  Do you need change in your life? What motivates you? There is a saying ...The fear of loss is greater than the desire for gain.  In today's modern world with so much coming so easy the saying above holds truer than ever.

I'll offer this advice for anyone that does decide they want change in 2005, write it down.  You can't forget what you write down and keep in front of you.   I recall making resolutions years ago in my twenties. One year when I was about age 27 I made ten resolutions for business, and ten for my personal life. I put both lists up in my work cubical and by that year's end I reached over half on each list.  You'd think with that success I'd do it each year.

My goals were desires. Desire is weak.  Desire lacks conviction.  It may as well be called lust.

Perhaps calling desire for change what it really is could be made a positive, call them your goals.  If you have a goal of losing weight or becoming rich, then write it down.

In keeping with this, be sure to establish desires or goals that are not unachievable. Sky may be the limit but only if you can't reach the sky.  If your arms are long, then go ahead and plan your goals on a greater level.

Good luck and stay focused.  I've got a personal saying that once again applies here ..."If you never quit, you'll get there."

If you set goals this year and reach some, don't do what I did as a one hit wonder.  Try doing it two years running and let me know if it was worth your while.

Oh... what is my resolution this year? We'll I guess I'm writing it down... I want to finish each task I start without interruption or being sidetracked.  I want to find peace with my wife and pay off all my business debts. As you can see these are not relative goals.  They are specific.  Happy New Year and good luck to you.
