Years ago I sang in a band.  Before that I knew I wanted to sing in a band.  That band broke my heart worse than any woman ever could.  I learned even before I was in that band what it meant to be a REAL musician.

And frankly as an Idealist I do resent performers being praised as musicians.

What is the difference you may ask?  For those of you that don't know and want to know... here it is.

Performers take someone else’s music, someone else’s words, someone else’s dance routine and perform it.  They may say they "breath life" into that music but sorry, just about 90% of the world can hold a note.  Just about any of us can sing is my point.

Now go create it (a song) from scratch.  Those of us that do, reach deep inside ourselves and express feelings, emotions and more through art.  That art is music.  We tell a story.  We express an emotion through music that frankly any performer just can't.  A great song can change your mood.  I great song can breifly capture your emotions.  You as an audiofile should be more aware of this and give more credit to these works.  If only to yourself, know that music with heart has more value.

This is not an opinion.  This is a definable fact.  You can easily fit people into these two categories.  And yes sometimes they fall into both categories.  Examples?

Performers: Brittany Spears.  In Sync, Madonna, etc....

Artist: U2, Jewel, Bob Seger, Tears for Fears etc...

Now for every rule there is an exception.  One that sticks way out is Frank Sinatra.  He is a performer that does in fact give credibility and reason for performers to exist.

On the flip side you also have some Artist that are even better performers, I'll leave you to fill in that blank with your own favorite example. :)

Having said this, why do we have shows like American Idol? I won't even begin to touch that subject outside of mentioning it.

We Americans are decadent.  I'm really sick of that side of our society, and creating musical icons in this day of performers is really a tragedy in the making.  Youth of today are learning that they can get a free ride into stardom.  Just sing a song.   Don't be a part of the creative.  Don't be an artist, be a performer. No offense but Lindsey Lohan as the next pop star is kinda stupid.  Heck, Jennifer Love Hewitt tried to too with "How can I Deal?"  Telling the story of how hard it is being famous and under the microscope.  Lindsey’s breakout single is in the same vain.  Gosh, I feel so sorry for them.  Life is hard being young, 18, single and on the go.  Save me. And that makes my point.  If that is the best emotional message they can offer, it is a waste of time.

Maybe most of us don't listen to the words to songs anymore, but even the Black Eye'd Peas come up with great grooves because they got an idea in their head.  Brittany and her likes don't have a thought in their head unless someone else puts it there.

Point is there is a lot of artist out there being robbed of a chance to be known for a REASON.  Not because they dance, show a little flesh and play for the camera.  That has been done so much I would swear we'd be tired of it by now.

The next time you listen to anything on the radio (I don't tune into the radio anymore so good luck to you) ask yourself a question for a while as you listen to each song... Is this an artist or performer?
